How is Salcombe Gin 'Start Point' - The Azores Edition made?
Salcombe Gin 'Start Point' - The Azores Edition is made by Salcombe Distilling Co. Co-founders Angus Lugsdin and Howard Davies, and their team.
As with their collection of Salcombe Gins, 'Start Point' - The Azores Edition takes its inspiration from Salcombe's rich maritime history, in particular the fruit schooners, known as "Salcombe Fruiters" handmade by traditional 19th Century boatbuilders in Salcombe and manned by Salcombe men, that would bring citrus fruit and spices to England from across the world.
For The Azores Edition, the Salcombe Distilling Co. team chose to look more closely at Salcombe's rich history of trade in oranges and spices with St Michael's in the Azores.
The key botanicals chosen by the Salcombe team to represent this key piece of Salcombe history are fresh, hand-peeled, unwaxed oranges, zesty lime leaf, fragrant chamomile, almond, cardamom, coriander, bay leaf, cinnamon, cubeb, liquorice and angelica.
Like all Salcombe Gin recipes, this exclusive gin is distilled on their stunning Arnold Holstein still 'Provident' which overlooks their waterside distillery in Salcombe.
Once distilled to perfect, Salcombe Gin 'Start Point' - The Azores Edition is then bottled in Salcombe Distilling Co.'s iconic bottles and given in a specially designed label with citrus fruits to reference the stunning botanicals and commemorate this special edition.
Where is Salcombe Gin 'Start Point' - The Azores Edition made?
Salcombe Gin 'Start Point' - The Azores Edition, like all Salcombe Gin, is crafted by Salcombe Distilling Co. at their waterside distillery (known as The Boathouse) in Salcombe, Devon, which overlooks the crab fishing quay in Salcombe.
One of the only distilleries in the world directly accessible by boat, you can visit the Salcombe Distillery & Bar to experience their award-winning Gin School and make your very own bottle of gin, or get involved in distillery tours and tasting, as well as enjoy a variety of cocktails at their bar whilst watching the distillery in action.
Of course, visiting their distillery shop is a must while you're there too, to home a keepsake from your trip.
What does Salcombe Gin 'Start Point' - The Azores Edition taste like?
Salcombe Gin 'Start Point' - The Azores Edition has magnificent waves of smooth juniper, citrus, herb and floral tones that are sure to impress any gin fan.
On the nose, earthy juniper is joined by inviting chamomile and a touch of orange citrus.
Those flavours develop across the palate, where notes of bay and lime leaf add herbal elements to this gin's delectably complex symphony of flavours.
The finish is long and satisfying, with moreish hints of almond that round everything out delightfully.
How do you serve Salcombe Gin 'Start Point' - The Azores Edition?
For the perfect Salcombe Gin 'Start Point' - The Azores Edition serving suggestion, we recommend pairing the gin with Marlish English Tonic Water and garnishing with slices of lemon.
This recommendation works so well because the citrus, floral and herb tones of the Salcombe gin are complemented wonderfully by the delicate citrus and bitter quinine of the tonic. The lemon then lifts the whole experience with its fragrant, citrussy allure.
