Try these three gin and Irn Bru cocktails for a totally new taste sensation
You can’t mention Scotland without mentioning Irn-Bru! Often referred to as the country's "other national drink" (after whisky), Irn-Bru - for the uninitiated - is a sweet, fizzy drink with a vivid orange hue. What does it taste like? Debate rages on across Scotland, from coast to coast! Is it a sort of liquid bubblegum flavour, or is it more like a carbonated caramel? A fruity cola? Nobody can quite decide - and that’s half the fun!
We’re always fond of experimenting with gin mixers here at Craft Gin Club, whether its adventurous flavoured tonic waters, craft lemonade, ginger beer or something else entirely - so we took on the challenge: could we create three tasty cocktails using Irn-Bru as the mixer?
The results of our experiments can be found below - we think our Irn-Bru cocktail creations are a success, but why don’t you give them a try at home, and decide for yourselves!
PS: We wouldn’t recommend using any of the fine craft gins you’ll find in our Gin of the Month boxes or on our online shop for these fun drinks, as the Irn-Bru will overwhelm the delicate natural flavours of the gin. However, a decent high-street bottle of London Dry Gin will work well for a tasty tipple when you’re not planning on opening a special bottle. Cheers!
Cocktail #1:
The G&B
Run out of tonic water? Not keen on quinine? Or maybe you just fancy something a little different for a change. Try this tasty Scottish alternative to your usual G&T!
To make your G&B, you’ll need:
50ml Gin
100ml Irn-Bru
Orange to garnish
Fill a glass with ice and add 50 ml of gin. Add 100ml of Irn-Bru and garnish with an orange wheel!
Cocktail #2:
Orange Cos-bru-politan
The cocktail that might have taken over the world had ‘Sex and the City’ been set in Glasgow? Who knows… all we know is that this tasty combination of raspberry and orange liqueurs, along with a dash of gin and topped up with Irn-Bru (plus a little squeeze of lime), is surprisingly tasty.
For a Cos-bru-politan, you’ll need:
45ml Gin
25ml Cointreau
30ml Irn-Bru
5ml Chambord
A squeeze of lime
Orange peel, to garnish
Shake the gin, Cointreau and Chambord with ice. Add to a glass, and top with Irn-Bru. Finish with a squeeze of lime. Garnish and enjoy!
Cocktail #3:
Ne-bru-ni
The Negroni of the north! This riff on the classic drink replaces vermouth with Irn Bru, and we aren’t sorry. Slightly bitter, slightly orange-y, we think it works.
For a Ne-bru-ni, you’ll need:
25ml Gin
25ml Campari
25ml Irn-Bru
Add the gin and campari to a cocktail shaker and shake with ice. Pour into a rocks glass filled with ice and top up with the Irn-Bru.
These are, of course, fun drinks suggestions, not intended for the true cocktail connoisseur! Craft Gin Club does, however, take cocktails very seriously!
