As whiskey cocktails go, one of the most famous in the world has to be the classic Whiskey Sour.
And with its delectable mix of woody, caramel-y whiskey tones, that bright zing of sour citrus, a touch of sweet syrup and a dash of spicy bitters, it’s easy to see why. Whether made with egg or without egg (with foam or without), the Whiskey Sour is a must-try for any cocktail fan!
The Whiskey Sour’s origin is unknown but the oldest known published mention of a “Whiskey Sour” is thought to be in the Waukesha Plain Dealer, a Wisconsin newspaper, in 1870.
The cocktail became hugely popular through the prohibition era and there soon appeared a range of alternative recipes, including a Whiskey Sour with red wine added, sometimes known as a New York Sour, one with egg known as a Boston Sour, and one made with Scotch whiskey known as a Scotch Sour.

The most common alcohol used in a Whiskey Sour cocktail recipe is whiskey. Many people believe the best whiskey for a Whiskey Sour is American bourbon or rye whiskey, but any Irish whiskey or English, Scottish or Japanese whisky can be used too.
The most basic formula for a Whiskey Sour is two parts whiskey, one part citrus juice and one part simple syrup - you can buy Craft Gin Club’s Simple Syrup here!
Most modern versions of the Whiskey also include Angostura Bitters to add a touch of warm spice and an egg white. The egg white gives the cocktail a silky texture and a marshmallowy foam top that is very delicious.
That Whiskey Sour mix is then shaken and served in a Whiskey glass with lots of ice. There are many Whiskey glasses out there but the most commonly used for this cocktail is the Rocks glass.
Whiskey Sour ingredients:
50ml whisky
30ml lemon juice
1 small egg white (optional)
15ml Simple Syrup
2 dashes Angostura Aromatic Bitters
Citrus zest, to garnish
Cherry, to garnish (optional)
If you are making a Whisky Sour with egg, shake the whisky, lemon juice, egg white, Simple Syrup and bitters without ice first and then shake with ice. Strain into a Whiskey glass like a Rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish, serve and enjoy!
