Here at Craft Gin Club, as much as we love innovating with new and delicious gin cocktail recipes, we always have time for a true classic - and the Singapore Sling is one of the best.

A vibrant, fruity, bright red cocktail, it’s brimming with stunning cherry and tropical fruit flavours that make it perfect for sipping through summer and beyond.

And, even though the ingredients list of the cocktail is long, it’s so easy to make! Scroll down to find the full recipe…

When and where was the Singapore Sling invented?

The Singapore Sling was invented in the early 1900s by a bartender at the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore by the name of Ngiam Tong Boon.

There have been countless subtle and large variations on the cocktail since then but we think the one below is the closest representation of the original Singapore Sling served to guests at Raffles over one hundred years ago.

What's a Singapore Sling made of?

The classic Singapore Sling recipe combines eight key ingredients:

  • Gin
  • Cherry brandy
  • Triple Sec - Cointreau is perfect here!
  • Benedictine D.O.M. Liqueur - a French herbal liqueur available to buy online and at supermarkets like ASDA and Morrisons.
  • Angostura Aromatic Bitters
  • Pineapple juice
  • Lime juice
  • Grenadine

Benedictine D.O.M. Liqueur - a French herbal liqueur available to buy online and at supermarkets like ASDA and Morrisons.

Angostura Aromatic Bitters

Pineapple juice

Lime juice

Grenadine

And the Singapore Sling is traditionally garnished with pineapple and a cherry.

Which gin should I use in a Singapore Sling?

For the Singapore Sling, we recommend using a high-quality craft London dry. Our first choice is Loveday Glas House Gin, Craft Gin Club’s August 2023 Gin of the Month.

With its mouthwatering mix of rosemary, lemon and peppery nasturtium tones, it is herbaceous, citrusy and savoury, providing a delicious contrast to the sweeter elements of the Singapore Sling while complementing the herby Benedictine D.O.M. Liqueur and orange flavours of the triple sec magnificently.

How does Singapore Sling taste?

The flavour profile of the Singapore Sling is a vibrant and exotic mix of sweet cherry, aromatic herbs, zesty pineapple and bright citrus tones that are tropical and delicious.

They all sit atop a rich base of delectably earthy and complex juniper notes from the gin.

The result is a gorgeous cocktail that’s wonderfully flamboyant yet decadent. The perfect treat for any cocktail connoisseur.
