How is Micil Spiced Orange Irish Gin made?
Micil Spiced Orange Irish Gin is made by the Micil Distillery in Galway, on the west coast of Ireland. They have used a unique mix of ingredients local to Galway and Connemara, a region of incredible natural beauty in County Galway, and classic London Dry botanicals including that quintessential juniper.
Micil Spiced Orange Irish Gin’s botanicals: Juniper, orange peel, clove, bog myrtle, hawberry, heather, bogbean, angelica, lemon peel, coriander, lemongrass, orris, cardamom, caraway, lime Leaf, cinnamon, elderflower and elderberry.
The recipe for Micil Spiced Orange Irish Gin was inspired by the history of Galway and its position as a major port:
Just like when it comes to their traditional Irish poitín and their original Micil Irish Gin, which won Silver at both the 2019 and 2020 World Gin Awards, when it comes to making Micil Spiced Orange Irish Gin, every measure is taken by Micil Distillery to ensure perfection.
From ensuring only the freshest ingredients are sourced to deciding whether to macerate their botanicals overnight or distilling them separately to extract the maximum amount of flavour, they work with a keen attention to detail and a love of quality craftsmanship.
What does Micil Spiced Orange Irish Gin taste like?
This spirit is filled with the scents and flavours of Connemara, Ireland. Expect the subtle floral notes of hand-picked Galway blooms on the nose and palate, followed by a zesty burst of vibrant orange. A sweet, spiced and silky-smooth finish lingers long on the palate.
How do you serve Micil Spiced Orange Irish Gin?
Micil Spiced Irish Gin is best served with a premium Indian tonic water (we recommend Troughtons Raising Spirits Premium Indian Tonic Water), garnished with blood orange slices and cardamom pods. You can find the recipe for Craft Gin Club’s perfect Micil Spiced Orange Irish Gin & Tonic right here!
Micil Spiced Orange Irish Gin is also fantastic in cocktails! We recommend trying it in Craft Gin Club’s The Banshee, our October 2021 Cocktail of the Month.
This sumptuous serve pairs Micil’s delicious Irish gin with Bibite Polara Green Mandarin, a refreshing mixer made in Sicily using Sicilian green mandarins. The cocktail is zesty and bright green in colour, making it a great cocktail idea for Halloween. Find the recipe at this link!
What other gins and spirits does Micil Distillery make?
Micil Distillery not only produces Craft Gin Club’s exclusive October 2021 Gin of the Month but a signature Irish gin and a traditional Irish spirit known as poitín (pronounced “poteen”) too:
Micil Irish Gin
The original, signature Irish gin from Micil Distillery, which they describe as a “uniquely West-of-Ireland gin”, this remarkable spirit uses local botanicals from the coastline, bogs and hedges of Connemara and the wider County Galway area - Craft Gin Club members will recognise the delicious touches of heather and bog myrtle from their spiced orange edition made for Craft Gin Club.
What does Micil Irish Gin taste like?
Expect beautiful citrus and floral notes on the nose, which lead into a palate that is rich with juniper, liquorice and spice tones that last long into the elegant finish.
How do you serve Micil Irish Gin?
This gin is fantastic in cocktails like a Martini or White Lady and is just as delicious served with a premium tonic water and a garnish of fresh orange slices.
Micil Irish Poitín
The family of Micil Distillery co-founders Pádraic and Jamín Ó Griallais have been distilling poitín in Galway for over 170 years, starting with their great-great-great-grandfather, Micil Mac Chearra (who the distillery is named after).
But what is poitín?
Often referred to as Irish moonshine, poitín is an unaged, white spirit made from potato or barley that predates whisky. It can have an ABV of anything between 40% and 90% and is brewed in pot stills - “poitín” actually mean “little pot”!
Micil Irish Poitín is made using malted barley and it is flavoured with a local botanical from Connemara called bogbean.
What does Micil Irish Poitín taste like?
With a velvety, smooth texture, Micil Irish Poitín has a delightfully complex mix of honey, spice and barley notes that will excite any spirit connoisseur.
How do you serve Micil Irish Poitín?
This beautiful poitín is great for simply sipping over ice but is also a fantastic alternative to gin in a Sour or a Martini. Micil Distillery also recommends trying their poitín in a Mule with ginger beer and a slice of lime, to garnish.
Micil Distillery also have a Heritage Edition Poitín made using a historic recipe that involves recreating a method of kiln-drying malt using turf fires. This gives the piotín a deeper, darker, whisky-like smokiness, with hints of treacle, spice, peat, oats and vanilla.
